Calafell obtained the Biosphere certification for sustainable tourism as a sign of its commitment to turn Calafell into a responsible tourist destination, both for citizens and tourists alike.
After signing the Letter of Commitment to Responsible Tourism, a text aimed at achieving the United Nations’ sustainable development goals and the results of the Paris Agreement, Calafell obtained the Biosphere certification granted by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), an institution endorsed by UNESCO. This certificate represents one of the most internationally recognised accreditations in the field of sustainability, and certifies that our tourist offerings are aligned with the 17 sustainable development goals set out by the UN and the 2030 Agenda.
Calafell, with the help of the Responsible Tourism Institute by means of this certification, certifies compliance with the sustainable development goals set out by the UN by managing a comprehensive destination management and positioning system through assistance and advisory for continuous improvement towards sustainability, deploying strategies to promote and develop means to raise awareness among visitors and locals alike.
Through this process, Calafell is committed to a responsible tourism model, taking on and ensuring the fulfilment of a series of principles such as sustainable management, the town’s economic and social development, the conservation and improvement of cultural heritage, environmental conservation, service quality and the involvement of citizens and tourists, among others.
